The Ultimate Sacrifice: Remembering the Martyrs of Ladakh

Ladakh's struggle for autonomy and recognition has been marked by numerous sacrifices, none more poignant than the martyrdom of three brave individuals: Nawang Rinchen, Tsering Stobdan, and Tsewang Dorjay. Collectively known as "NDS," these heroes gave their lives in the pursuit of freedom and self-governance. On August 27, 1989, Nawang Rinchen of Samkar village, Tsering Stobdan of Durbuk, and Tsewang Dorjay of Saboo were martyred in a firing incident at the historic Pologround in Leh. Their sacrifice was part of a larger agitation demanding Union Territory status for Ladakh. Their legacy is not alone, as two other brave individuals, Ven Lobzang Tsondus from Likir monastery and Tashi Angchuk from Saspol, had laid down their lives on January 24, 1981, during an agitation demanding Scheduled Tribe status for Ladakh. The sacrifice of these five martyrs will never be forgotten, and their bravery will continue to inspire generations to fight for their rights and freedoms.

The memorial park at Skyatsaks, Leh, and the adjacent NDS Stadium stand as a lasting tribute to these martyrs, honoring their sacrifice and bravery, and ensuring their legacy endures.
